CleanAirZone: Re-thinking Air Purification the Greener Way

In the urban jungle, life is going full-throttle digital. Harbingering into the era of the “indoor generation,” we are likely to spend most of our hours within the confinements of a stuffy cubicle—which we once called our homes—intermittently tapping some kind of smart device for updates from the outside world. However, within this digital entropy, the need for fresh air can hardly be exaggerated or overestimated.

The deeds of the days past and their compounding effects on nature have ruined the quality of the air we need to survive! Needless to say, moving indoors doesn’t change anything, given that indoor air pollution is just as lethal as the outdoor variety.

Practically, every household item and action has an impact on the quality of air inside our homes or any other indoor environment. From NOx, SO2, ozone, CO to volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PM, radon, and microorganisms, a number of air pollutants have been recognized to exist indoors.

What’s worse? These pollutants accumulate if the indoor environment is not well ventilated, adversely impacting the health of its inhabitants. In fact, WHO’s fact sheet on household air pollution due to indoor pollutants states that 3.8 million premature deaths occur annually.

While some might argue that air purifications/filtration systems can help prevent this, its outcomes in the real world are far from optimum—a fact that the makers of CleanAirZone understood a decade ago. On the lookout for a better solution, they decided to take an unconventional route by delving deeper into the biology of our planet.

For billions of years, the earth has cleansed its atmosphere of pollutants by combining bacteria and water. Unlike many mechanical air purifying devices, CleanAirZone is a living bio-system that fits right at home, workplace, warehouses, growing environments, and many other indoor spaces. The air purifying device captures, ingests, and digests the contaminants through a combination of water and a proprietary natural macrobiotic enzyme formula (BioCAZ Solution) to not only neutralize contaminants from your air but to eliminate them completely.

The way this works is quite simple! The CleanAirZone system uses the electrical charge of harmful airborne particles and a vacuum created in a low-pressure tank to attract contaminants to the grounded area of the device. Once captured, contaminants are digested by the natural enzymes and microorganisms in the BioCAZ Solution that is dissolved in water. Biooxidation then converts the digested pollutants into harmless byproducts—rendering them non-detectable even at the DNA level. “Our technology never loses its ability to maintain airflow and becomes stronger over time with naturally increasing biology count in the liquid,” says David Podmayersky, Chief Sustainability Officer, CleanAirZone.

Furthermore, CleanAirZone’s technology can be customized based on a client’s environment and deployed in any kind of indoor environment. They even have a dedicated solution for the agricultural industry—CAZAG—to help customers achieve significant cost savings through the reduction and/or elimination of crop losses due to mold, bacteria, and plant viruses. This can be applied across aeroponics, aquaponics, hydroponics, and soil-based operations. While residential spaces need closed-loop systems, grow environments require open-loop systems to continuously circulate air. As each of these indoor environments holds unique fluid dynamics, CleanAirZone’s team of industry experts identifies the pollutants present in the air, quantifies them through algorithms, and understands the fluid dynamics of the airspace. Next, they look at the infrastructure and the logistics of the space and find a way to move air into the purifier.

CleanAirZone’s novel approach eliminates even the most dangerous air contaminants and viruses, including COVID-19, gases, odors, and microorganisms. As the system comes without any filters or UV bulbs, maintenance is easy and cost-effective. Natural protection aside, it utilizes bio air purification technology that only consumes 0.6 kW/day—much lower than any conventional air purifier.

Clean Air Zone has recently completed the filing of a U.S. patent for an indoor air purification system that can be incorporated into a medium-size or large indoor facility to remove airborne contaminants. This system, for which the patent is pending, would be applicable for any retail, office, industrial, apartment, hotel, hospital, nursing home, school, or any indoor facility. The "Clean Room" System, can work on either a "standalone" basis in which indoor air is exchanged or could be adopted into an existing, or new HVAC system. This "Clean Room" system significantly expands the marketability of the CAZ technology since it will be able to be incorporated into the centralized air exchange system of an indoor facility.

Clean Air Zone is now looking to collaborate with the right partners for commercializing their product. The company is actively running pilots to check the efficiency and efficacy of the product. In addition, it wants to complete the development of large-scale central units for purifying the air in large growing environments. “With such capabilities, CleanAirZone found an efficient biological solution for a biologically created problem,” concludes Stephane Ifrah, COO, CleanAirZone.
